HomeMy WebLinkAbout1961-03-22Selectmens Meeting 22 March 1961 The meeting came to order at 7.30 PM all members of the Board being present. Warrant No. 12, totalling $8,725~53 was presented by Town Acct.- Barrett and chedked and approved by the Board. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Mr. John Santos was present and stated that he wished to clarify his statements of the previous week, wanted it understood that he had'come in alone not with Mr. Gaspie and that he was not in chaoots with anyone nor trying to throw the Fire Chief out efa 'job. Mr. Meilbye asked if there was any lack of cooperation bet- ween the Chief and the Sconset Dept. and Mr. Santos said that there could be better cooperation. Fire Chief Bartlett was present to discuss with the Board the various matters which had been brought up at the~previous meeting; Mr. Pease inquired about'Mr. Gaspies statement that the line truck was not available for line work, the Chief stated that the truck was shared by himslef and for fire alarm work by vote~ of the Town, that he felt it was available adequateTly for the purposes of fire alarm work. Mr.-Pease asked about the matter of wire and switches not' being available for some fire alarm boxes, the Chief stated that the wire was available that he had repeatedly asked Mr. Gaspie~what he needed to install the boxes and that he could never get Mr. Gaspie to give him a list of the needed materials. On the matter of Sconset equipment, the chief stated that he felt the Sconset had as good a shake on the equipment.available as the town dept. Stated that he had . put the new radio in the service truck he uses and an old one in the Sconset truck but that the radio in the Sconset truck was ok and was kept in repair as needed along with the other radio equipment and that only last Wed. morning a man from the mainland had been down on these matters. Stated that~he had checked the gated Y complained of and that it~was OK. On the matter of replacing the Sconset with the Chev. from town on various occasions,'stated that Chev. was basically~the same type as the Sconset vehicle that he-could not'see how they would be unable to operate That it was necessary to bring the Sconset vehicle'to town twice a year for inspections and that at these time he had same checked over~ polished,' running boards painted and any other.items taken care of that it needed.'On the matter Vacation the chief stated that depending on length of servi men had 3 weeks vacation and that.same was computed in the same manner as~the police dept. ~that there was mo set polic · in the~town on same. Mr. Meilbye asked what notice was give the Sconset deputy on the change of vehicles and Chief Bart stated that he always tried to call personally and if he not get Mr. Santos would leave a message at his home. Mr. William Maine asked about when the town voted that the serve truck be used jointly and the number of calls.that come ove~ the telephone as'against over the alarm, Mr. Waine also discussed the need if any of converting the hydrants to Nat. Standard thread, but this part of the discussion became a little mixed up. Mr. Joseph Caton was present and requested a permit to hold the c ifire works display on the everning of 3 July 1961 and same was voted approved. Shellfish Warden Francis was present and ~iscussed with the BoarC the matter of fee charged on Family, permits stated that he believed same should be L.O0 and that the commercial fee remain as is at $2.00. On motion made and seoonded it was t~ so voted. .~tt £ce Se lectmens Meeting 22 March 1961 Bids were'received and'opened on furnishing a new Willys~Jeep four wheel drive vehicle for the Police Dept.~On~y'one bid was~received that from Albert Ld'Silva Inc. in the amount of~$2,844.90, and pn. motion made and seconded it was voted that this contract be awarded to this firm. The Board was in receiPt of a request to'proclaim Aprill'as Cancer control month, and so voted, requesting the local press to carry this proclamation. A letter was received from.the U.S.C.G. relative to any in%erest the Town'might have in the Madaket C. G. station, same having to be removed from the property..It was voted to advise the C. G. that our only interest was to have this property removed or cleaned up. voted to refer the matter of a lease of Legion Hall to the Town Counsel. Voted to adv. for bids on an hourly basis for bulldozing at the Town and Sconset dumps. Voted to inquire of the'Board of Assessors of any additional land in the Creeks area that is of owners unknown. A letter receivedf from the Chamber'of Commerce relative tO window boxes on Main st. was tabledfor one week. The following~liCense renewals were granted: L.-Pernald dba.The India House, Innhiolders; Gordon Mtr. Co. Class 1 used car; Bayberry Inn, Innholders; Applications for renewals of alcoholic beverage.licenses were received, from the following and voted to take the course' prescribed by law: CapN Tobeys Chwdr. bar; Oper House and Chicken Box restaurant. A letter was'received ~om Sen.-Sal~0~siall r~lative to Broad creek and advising that the Eng. did.not feel spending money in the area could be justified and placed on'file. Voted to Adv.'~for bids on,,Art. 30 calling for a new dump~truck for the Highway'dept. same to be {n by $ April 61.-and to add to the specifications lights on the roof. Mr. Meilbye.~ated~that the Board should'sit-down with all , dept."heads and formulate a policy,to avoid future:mis- 'understandings. ' ' ", .... '.
