Geo~ge ~astos voiced the Objections of the heirs of Phillip Murray who died in 1941 owning land in that area known as the~ Creeks. ~ In addition to the drainage value of the land,' the beauty of the [C~!? ? area is also considered to be an asset ~to the town.' ~The eventual total - cost .- ~ to the ,town has never been mentioned--for reimbursement for the land and ~' '~:~' whatever construction'may be planned.~]~' He said that towns cannot take land'~'~%. '~ i,'::". by eminent domain simply to make it public property J: It must be for public ~1~ ~ ~ ~ purposes, and cannot be leased to an individual or firm for commercial pu,r- poses. Another objection is that there has been no publicity about any · specific plans, for ,the area,'i and without a .plan that shows specific ,public · use rather than use .through which the public would derive'incidental benefit .i we are not in a position to vote on it. Byron Snow said that in recommending this ar. ticle the .Finance '~:', ~' ~'' C.~~. . committee was looking to the future economy of the town. :' He expects there ~ ,~: ....... will be federal grants under .the new administration and that Nantucket should ~ not 'miss the boat' as it did in the days of WPA 'when we might have gotten a .~ Town Building and other things~ . There is an Army Engineers plan of about 5 ' · years ago for a bulkhead extending, from· Monomoy nearly to Commercial Wharf. There may be other plans also but this is an attempt to look. to' the future :~,.,,i ·~ to attract the yachting trade ;.. There is also the possib,ility that it would . not have to be. brought to th~ legislature. ,~ No one has said .that the' Board of Selectmen or. the Park and~ Recreation Committee would not be willing' to consider .. the sale of the land. . ~!:::!.. ?~.-~. ~'-~.~. ~--kr ~...~ ':~ ~:.':: ~ ~"~'~..', ,~: Albert Pitkin, a: member 'of the' ~anning .Board,'.. said this was ~simply~ a first step in a long range program' for· filling a long-.felt, need. ,~There was ,.:, .~ no point in spending money, for plans to develop land which the town did not ~;L-.~,'J:, even own, although the Planning Board ~oes have an idea of the way they feel it could~be~.developed:' "There is a great' increase in the number~of, family ·''', yachts from. 25 to 40 fe~t. ~ They all know .Nantucket as a good harbor in. fair ~c;. ~ weather, but without protection otherwise," and lacking in docking facitities~' .
