Dear Dr Folger
Have been considerJ.ng 1'1rs Caton for
thoracoplasty Discussed her case with Dr Richard
Overholt, lung surgeon for Lahey Clinic We both
aereed on it Dr NJ.eld of New Bedford happened
to call on her and when he uhderstood the improba-
bJ.lity of her cavitJ closing and thereby shutting
off J.ts cross-infection to other lung he was
strongly inclined toward this procedure
It J.s a fact that rest in bed, artJ.fJ.cial
pneumothorax and phrenicectomy have not been able,
after a reasonalbe time, to do the trick Hence, it
is necessary to resort to sowething rather radical,
especially before her right sJ.de developes an
infection that lessens her vitality Her present
weight is still up to normal -- 180 pounQS
The operatJ.on would occur at Deaconess
or Northern Baptist Hospital where she would con-
valesce until she returned here Her hospital
expense would be about $100 co\ering four to five
weeks There would be no charge for operation
lVould you kindly take this up 'ljll th your
board Finally, I believe they will save money
by l~~itin~ the perJ.oQ of her hospitalization
· 1Tithout J.t I doubt that she will ever become free
enough from tubercle bacilli to admJ.t of gOJ.ng home
