HomeMy WebLinkAbout1931-12-01 ~MMI~ ~ M~UrA~ De&r Sir It has come to my attention that many m~oiDal~t~es, due to continued ~employment and the general bus~ness depression, are finding it necessary st~ll furthe~ to ~ncrease their outlaye for relief purposes this winter In the opin~on of some of the members of the Senate, present conditions require - even more urgently than last year - that the federal gover~ent should assist the states and munic~pal~t~es ~n meeting part of the creamed burden necessitated by this emergency To help us ~n deciding upon a proper federal policy, will you let me know at once 1 ~at increase has there been ~n the n~ber of ~employed Dermons assisted ~n your c~ty, compared with December, 19307 With December, 19297 2 How much have the czty appropriat~ons for the ~employed ~d the poor ~ncreased this year over 1930~ Over 1929~ ~ 3 In your judgment, how many additional persons will need relief during the w~nter months? 4 ~at proportion of the emergency burden ~ being carried by private relief agencies~ How much have their expenditures creased, compared w~th 19~07 W~th 19297 5 Can you state the amo~t of relief g~ven weekly to the average family (2 adults and 2 children)? 6 Is your c~ty tn a pos~tion to float further bond issue~ in the event that your present ~ncome ~s ~nsuff~cient to meet adequately the relief needs of the co~tty? 7 Do you favor m federal appropriation to assist the local governments in meeting their emergency relief burdens, and do you feel that such an appropriation would be of a~d tn providing more ~equate relief for the needy or ~n lessening the burden on t~paYers~ ~e to the pressure of t~me, an ~ediate reply w~ll be gremtly appreciated Sincerely yours,
