Board of Selectmen,
Nantucket, Massachusetts
Gentlemen
Your communication of March 17 to Dmrector Adams has been
referred to me
As I understand the situation, you would like to have
authority to extend the permits for the taking of scallops by the
fishermen through the month of April for this reason that the adult
scallops which are left after April 1st will die and it will be a
benefit to your fishermen to be able to take them for commercial
purposes throughout the above stated month
As
I
further
understand
the
situation, you have written for
this privxlege after a vote had been taken of your Honorable Board,
of which you are Secretary If this is l~he case, and as I under-
stand the law, Chapter 130, sectmon 82, I do have the authority to
make changes from time to time
Therefore, I do authorize your Honorable Board to extend
the permits to take scallops by the fmshermen through the month of
April for the purpose of taking adult scallops for commercial reasons,
and I will leave it to you to specify the amount that each man may
take per day
As to the appointment of Ur S~muel R Burchell as local
shellfish inspector, I woul~ say that you are perfectly well within
your rzghts to make this apoointment mn order to enforce any and all
of the regulations that you wish to have enforced in the conservation
of the shellfish industry
//~/~ ~ Yours very truly,
