Dear Sir -
There is a petition before your Board from the Citizens'
Gas. Electric & Power Company of Nantucket for permission to erect
a line of poles along Garduer and North Roads at Sh~mo to the
house owned by A G Brock and Dr F E Lewis
There is at present an underground electric service in the
north Road owned by Mr Elder and his associate. Mr Smith
We have tried repeatedly to come to some agreement with Mr Elder
so that we could connect with this line. which ~Ans directly
past our house He has refused to enter into any agreement unless
we forfeit to him a right of way in North Road which runs between
his house and the harbor Mr Elder has stated that he wished to
have this right of way so that the public would not have access to
the waterfront We do not wish to release this right of way be-
cause we believe it should be open to the public as it is at present
Mr ~lder h,~s already caused us great discomfort by depriving us
of water until the system was taken over by t~_he Wannacomet Water Co.
We were unable to have a telephone connected$ the Shimmo system until
we had petitioned the Department of Public Utilities
We do not feel that we should be subjected to the expense of
a long underground service to connect with one house so we have
asked for a pole line
In a letter to Dr Lewis dated Ja~ 28, lgYg Mr Elder said.
"I see no reason why we should not furnish you with water, electri-
city and the telephone What it will cost you will depend to some
~ extent on what our cest is "On this basis we went ahead and spent
\ about $200 on service connections and then service was refused
as above stateel
\ We built our house in keeping with others in that section at
~ a cost of about $12000 Electricity is necessary to make it livable
\and for our comfort and we cannot see why we should be deprived of
\this service for which we are perfectly willing to pay a reasonable
