I~PORTANT NOTICE
To the Disbursing Officers of
State and Military Aid and Soldiers Relief
Gentlemen -
I deem it advisable to oring to your attention a very important act
entitled Chapter 186 Acts of 1930· of the ~assachusetts Legislature which will
~o into effect July §j 1930, and whxch aims to increase the State Aid allowance
~ranted to veterans and their dependents from $6 O0 to $10 00 a month, but not
more than $20 00 to the dependents of any one veter~u
In order to expedite action on the above-mentioned law so that beneficiaries
may derive prompt benefits from same you are hereby per~itted to increase those
cases of State Aid now on your rolls who in your Judgment are in need of this
a~ount and allow $9 00 for the month of July, and $10 00 a month from August
subject however to any former limitations that may have been set by this office
In view of the fact that the law will not become operative until July § 1930
cannot permit the payment of the full amount of $10 00 on the July rolls hence our
reason for allowing the payment of $9 00 for July
I would also refer you to the following Acts of 1930
Chapter 110 which went into effect June 11 makes it possible for a widow
and children or a dependent father or mother of a deceased veteran to receive
Soldiers Relief where they were heretofore refused same because the veteran was
the victim of his own criminal or wilful misconduct Therefore the above-noted
dependent relatives of deceased veterans are eligible for such Soldiers~ Relief as
may be necessary for their support from the place of legal settlement regardless
of the cause of the death of the veteran
Chapter 192 which will become operative July 8 ~akes crippled blind or
helpless children of veterans whether minors or adults eligible to receive
Soldiers Relief from the place of their settlement if they are in receipt of U S
Pension
Chapter 195 which took effect upon its passage extends the benefits of the
Military Aid law to ~assachusetts veterans receiving treatment in the U S Naval
Hospital Newport Rhode Island provided that they are hos~italized by the U S
Veterans Bureau and are not in receipt of Government compensation
Chapter 233 which will become operative Jul~ 18 extends the date of
marriage eligibility for widows of veterans of the Spanish-A~erican ~ar and the
Philippine Insurrection so that said widows may oo~e under the provisions of the
State Aid and burial law if married to the veteran prior to September I 19~
Will you kindl~ call the attention of Tour burial a~ents to this ch~n~e in the
burial law?
Yours very truly
