HomeMy WebLinkAboutNantucket Energy Study Committee Minutes 11-06-2008_201402051114525918 Draft Minutes of The Nantucket Energy Study Committee November 6, 2008 5:00 PM Two Fairgrounds Road Members Present: Chairman - Barbara Gookin, Vice Chairmen – Carl Borchert, Mike Burns, Anne Kuszpa, Sandra Welsh Board of Selectmen Liaison - Whitey Willauer I. Call to Order - The meeting was called to order by Chairman Gookin at 5:00 PM II. Approval of the Agenda - Unanimously approved III. Approval of the Minutes - Unanimously approved IV. Public Comment - None V. Discussion and Action : A. Action - Presentation by Mary Anne Worth, Director of The Nantucket Council of Human Services on the proposed Community Energy Forum to be held in the High School Gymnasium November 22, 2008 from 9:00Am to 12:00 Noon. The Energy Committee volunteered to be actively involved in the support of this project. B. Action - The Introduction of the visiting Ornithologists and Birding Enthusiasts who were invited to speak to us on bird migration and concerns about birds on Nantucket as related to Wind Energy development . This group offered to form a sub committee to aid us in our endeavor to get it right C. Action - Introduction of Worcester Polytechnic Students (WPI) with a brief overview by them as they continue to assist The Energy Committee with productive research in municipal wind energy development and attending weekly workshops with us. They presented an overview of their Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) and how they obtain college credits through this process They will be with us until December 18, 2008 C. Discussion - Review of The White Paper on Land-Based Wind Energy. There were no additions or corrections at this time D. Discussion - Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) grant status. Anne Kuzspa will contact the MTC to schedule a conference telephone call. E. Discussion - Mike Burns reported on the Marine Renewable Energy Conference he and Sandra Welsh attended in Fall River MA at the Advance Technology and Manufacturing Center on Monday October 6, 2008. F. Discussion - Nantucket’s residential and commercial wind turbine update including works in progress and new permits issued. G. Discussion - The meeting held with Kitt Johnson on Wednesday Afternoon at Two Fairgrounds Road at 2:00 PM. Mr. Johnson is Draft Minutes of The Nantucket Energy Study Committee Page 2 of 2 November 6, 2008 G.(continued)… Edgartown’s pro bono appointee to their Selectman’s board to study the benefits and feasibility of under-water turbines in the Muskeget Channel and how Edgartown and Nantucket can be in a partnership to control the destiny of that area as related to Energy power production and distribution in the future. Mr Johnson also suggested we look into The Green Energy Act as a source of Island solar electricity and as an “ inexpensive and quick fix” for some of the Island’s power needs VI. Students - Justine Skelly, Diana Berlo, Jennifer Hunt, and Amanda Martori Continue to invite local groups to our meetings e.g. Harbor Master, Maria Mitchell Association, Harbor Plan Implementation Committee, School Students, Board of Health, Angler’s Club, Non Voting Tax Payers, Etc.
