HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrimary Report 2016 2016 STATE PRIMARY ELECTION - SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 On Thursday, September 8, 2016, the 2016 State Primary Election was held at the Nantucket High School, 10 Surfside Road, Nantucket, MA. 02554. It was called on a Warrant by the Board of Selectmen on August 3, 2016, and duly posted on August 4, 2016 by Constable Catherine Flanagan Stover. At the close of registration on August 19th, there were 8868 registered voters: At 5:30 AM, 3000 each of sealed and unmarked regular Republican and Democratic ballots, and 100 each of Libertarian and Green Rainbow Party ballots were delivered to the polls by Warden Frank Psaradelis. At 6:15 AM, the Warden and Town Clerk inspected the Accu-Vote 2000 ballot box and it proved to be empty. At 6:40 AM, a zero ballot report was printed, signed and posted. At 6:45 AM, the elections officers were sworn in by the Town Clerk. At 7:00 AM, the Warden announced to all that the polls were open. The Deputy Ward Clerk delivered ballots to the check-in Inspectors. Officers Amanda Schwenk and Michael Mastriano from the NPD reported for duty. Additional blocks of 200 ballots at a time were dispensed throughout the day. [Town Clerk's note: The voting machine registered 169 voters at 10:12 AM. This number did not include the one ballot rejected by the machine, nor the sixty-one absentee ballots] At 12:00 PM, the Deputy Clerk and Warden inspected and read each name and address listed on all absentee ballot envelopes received, for a total of sixty-five (65). [There were five (5) absentee ballots that had arrived from the Town Clerk’s office.] The names were marked off on the absentee-voter master list. The inspectors marked the names on the voters' check-in and check- out lists. The absentee ballots were put through the ballot machine. Any machine-rejected ballots were placed in the side compartment for hand-counting at the end of the night. [Town Clerk's note: The voting machine registered 338 voters at 1:25 PM. This number did not include the one ballot rejected by the machine.] Throughout the day there were nine (9) spoiled ballots. They were marked with an “X”, and placed in an envelope marked “Spoiled Ballots.” The envelope was sealed at the close of the election. There was a great deal of confusion and frustration on the part of the voters. It is suspected that many were voting in a Primary for the first time and didn’t grasp the concept of a primary. They couldn’t understand why all candidates’ names weren’t on the ballot that they selected. As there was a local candidate, and many people turning out in support of him, they were confused when they found out that he was going to be on the November ballot. At 4:00 PM Officer Christopher Kelly from NPD reported for duty. At 7:00 PM Officers John Muir and Bryan Jackson from NPD reported for duty. They remained until the ballots were secured. At 8:00 PM, the Warden announced to one and all that the polls were closed. Those who were in line were allowed to cast their vote. Announced as such, preliminary totals were printed, signed and posted at 8:15 PM. At 8:02 PM, the election tellers were sworn in by the Town Clerk. Sorting for write-ins and hand-counting of two (2) machine-rejected ballots commenced. The necessary adjustments to the preliminary totals were entered onto the tally sheets. At 8:51 PM, the 2016 State Primary Election results were announced as follows: DEMOCRATIC BALLOTS Representative in Congress: KEATING, WILLIAM 600 ballots Blanks: 105 ballots Write-ins: 7 ballots Councillor: FERREIRA, JOSEPH 518 ballots Blanks: 194 ballots Write-ins: 0 ballots Senator in General Court: CYR, JULIAN 338 ballots LYONS, SHEILA 230 ballots MANNAL, BRIAN 57 ballots Blanks: 82 ballots Write-ins: 5 ballots Representative in General Court: FERNANDES, DYLAN 272 ballots HEYLIN, MICHAEL 9 ballots HOPKINS, EWELL 44 ballots LAMBERT, JESSICA 39 ballots SOVERINO, TIMOTHY 284 ballots Write-ins: Tobias Glidden 42 ballots Blanks: 21 ballots Write-ins: 1 ballots Sheriff: PERELMAN, JAMES 688 ballots Blanks: 18 ballots Write-ins: 6 ballots REPUBLICAN BALLOTS Representative in Congress: ALLIEGRO, MARK 60 ballots O’MALLEY, THOMAS 76 ballots Blanks: 12 ballots Write-ins: 3 ballots Councillor: Blanks: 130 ballots Write-ins: 21 ballots Senator in General Court: CROCKER, JAMES 62 ballots SCHIAVI, ANTHONY 79 ballots Blanks: 8 ballots Write-ins: 2 ballots Representative in General Court: Blanks: 127 ballots Write-ins: 24 ballots Sheriff: Write-ins: James Perelman 58 ballots Blanks: 89 ballots Write-ins: 4 ballots GREEN RAINBOW BALLOTS Representative in Congress: Blanks: 1 ballots Write-ins: 3 ballots Councillor: Blanks: 3 ballots Write-ins: 1 ballots Senator in General Court: Blanks: 3 ballots Write-ins: 1 ballots Representative in General Court: Blanks: 2 ballots Write-ins: 2 ballots Sheriff: Blanks 1 ballots Write-ins: 3 ballots UNITED INDEPENDENT PARTY BALLOTS Representative in Congress: Blanks: 0 ballots Write-ins: 5 ballots Councillor: Blanks: 3 ballots Write-ins: 2 ballots Senator in General Court: Blanks: 3 ballots Write-ins: 2 ballots Representative in General Court: Blanks: 2 ballots Write-ins: 3 ballots Sheriff: Blanks: 2 ballots Write-ins: 3 ballots TOTAL BALLOTS CAST: 8868 Registered Voters 872 Ballots cast 9.7 % Percentage voting All unmarked, unvoted ballots were sealed in a box by Warden Frank Psaradelis.
