The ad is actually not an ad put in the newspaper by the Town but rather by a private group. I will forward your comments to the Board of Selectmen. C. Wow! We are experiencing similar problems on Martha's Vineyard. Although the specifics of our situation are different, we are encountering the same resistance to 'let Mother nature do its work'. To put it briefly, a group of homeowners want to spend $4.5M of their own money to build a 420' bridge next to a beach with endpoints that will be in the water or close to it in 20 years (plus, a structure of this sort degrades the area). We believe there are better ways to improve vehicular access to a remote area without compromising the integrity of a special rural environment. (And, not to mention the fact that the end-points will require more revetments.) The second part of the problem is revetments. If you go to our website www.squibnocket.org and click on the tab for aerials, look at the first picture (double click for full view). This will give you an understanding of what the three revetments have done to the area and why they need to be removed (this is under discussion but not resolved). And, third, we are trying to take a broad, strategic approach to the area, including protecting the coastal dunes & banks and the barrier beach. We could use some guidance here. It might be helpful to connect. Please check-out our website. Also, if you have materials that we might include on our website, we'd be very interested in reviewing them. Or, if you have a website we can link to, that would also be good. One other area of interest for us. We have hired a high-end technical team to develop soft solutions for this area and any references on your island to barrier beaches with road systems that serve residences would be helpful. We need to develop some case studies. We could talk on the phone if you think this makes sense. That would probably be easier than responding to this long email. All the best, Charlie ParkerChilmark (Marthas Vineyard)
