Re:Baxter Road
Dear Selectmen,
I have reviewed the Draft MOU proposed for the Town of Nantucket and the Sconset
Beach Preservation Fund concerning the design, permitting, and construction of a coastal
engineering structure for the protection and/or relocation of Baxter Road, the homes
thereon, and the infrastructure therein.I propose two very minor technical edits:1)that
the date for the filing of the Notice of Intent with the Conservation Commission in
Section 3 should be July 5,not July 1,to be consistent with the ConCom's posted filing
deadline, and 2)that the approval of any appropriation by a Town Meeting referred to in
Section 8 should be at any Special or Annual Town Meeting, not limited to the Spring
2014 ATM.Otherwise, the document is fully acceptable as proposed."Although SBPF
had no input in developing the MOU,I have no further comments on it.
SBPF is please that the Town is recognizing that the erosion of the Sconset Bluff
imminently threatens not just private homes, but all ofSconset, including the Town's
infrastructure, public access areas, and other important community assets. If the MOU is
adopted by the BOS,we look forward to working with you on this important project in a
way that saves the Town money, increases the tax base, limits Town liability, eases
burdens on the Town, expands public access, and preserves historic homes and places, all
with an environmental balance and stewardship that we can be proud of for generations to-
come."
