As I'm sure you know, this type of solution to our problem has a long history ofsuccessful installations both here and in Europe. I grew up in seaside towns on the south coast of England, which were and remaindependent for their livelihood on the the money spent by vacationers who comelargely to enjoy their beaches. All of these seaside towns have promenades protected by sea walls with groynes[jetties] projecting seaward at intervals. Many of the towns also supplement their beaches with regular beach nourishment. These systems have been in place for decades, and are stable. When I tell my English friends the trouble we have had trying to get approval toprotect our homes and infrastructure, they are amazed and incredulous, especiallywhen they learn that we are trying to do it with private money. Whatever could be the problem? Next year I hope I will be able to tell them that we finally have a solution in place, and that the village has been saved.
