Scituate — 0 Comments Seawall repairs begin at Scituate Lighthouse By Ruth Thompson Wicked Local Scituate Posted Aug 07, 2013 @ 05:20 PM What’s Going On Here? THE PROJECT: The seawall that protects the parking lot and lighthouse is being replaced to better protect the area from storm damage. START AND FINISH: According to Scituate Department of Public Works Engineering Supervisor Kevin Cafferty, the contract duration for the project, which started the week of August 5, is six months but that could change due to weather. TECHNICALLY SPEAKING: David Ball, a member of the Scituate Seawall Committee and president of the Cedar Point Association, which makes up the area around the Lighthouse, said that “this isn't technically a seawall, it is a granite revetment.” Ball said the structure would be built using 8 to 10 ton granite stone. “Borings were done last year and peat was found about 30 feet below grade,” he said. “The engineer felt that a poured concrete seawall might eventually have problems because of the peat. From an aesthetic point, the granite wall will be better.” The new wall be at least two feet higher than the present structure and will give good protection to the Lighthouse and parking area. THE NEED: The seawall and the lighthouse have been pretty badly battered over the past couple of years due to severe storms and weather. This past winter the storms were particularly hard on the Lighthouse and revetment. “We saw this as a good time to make some improvements,” Cafferty said. THE COST: Just under $720,000. FUNDING: Ball said most of the project funding will come from Community Preservation funds, per Town Meeting approval. “CPC funds can be used for this project because the work will protect a historical resource, the Lighthouse, and a recreational source, the parking area and adjacent beach,” he said. There were two votes to approve CPC funds for the project - $475,000 at the 2011 Town Meeting, and an additional $200,000 at this year's annual Town Meeting. The remainder of the cost will come from available seawall funds in the town’s budget. CAUTION: A large area of the Lighthouse parking lot has been relined to accommodate the machines and materials that will be used for the project. Visitors to the area may not have access to certain spots because of the construction that will be taking place. THE CHALLENGE: “The challenging part of the project is closing off the area to do a construction project,” Cafferty said. “Everyone loves the Lighthouse and it is hard to shut the Lighthouse and park down for six months. But it has to be done to protect the area.” Cafferty added that Ball and the residents of the Cedar Point area have been very supportive. Care to know more about something?
