TOWN OF NANTUCKET
BOARD OF HEALTH
INFORMATION SESSION-MAY 24, 2011
PLANNING BOARD MEETING ROOM-2 FAIRGROUNDS ROAD
MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Roggeveen, Malcolm MacNab, MD, PhD, James
Cooper, Helene Weld, RN.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Stephen Visco
AGENDA
The information session is opened at 1:30 p.m. and Ms. Gabrielle Sakolsky of Cape Cod
Mosquito Control is introduced.
1. Mosquito Control Presentation – Ms. Sakolsky discusses the Cape’s Program,
procedurally what has worked for them, the equipment and larvacides used, costs
associated with the Program, and their budget. Ms. Sakolsky states that Nantucket
may want to appoint a Mosquito Control Commission. Representative Madden
and Senator Wolfe can be approached to develop legislation. The
BOH/BOS/Mosquito Commission could send a letter to the Reclamation Board
indicating our interest in conducting mosquito control under the authority of
Reclamation Board while in the process of pursuing legislation. Ms. Sakolsky
recommends hiring someone this summer (with a pesticide license), and she
would train them. In the future, we should look to hire two permanent employees.
The Act of 1965 was discussed which is in front of town counsel awaiting their
determination. No recommendation will be made until an opinion is rendered.
2. Concerns from the Board - Dr. MacNab asks if the pursuit of a program should be
a combined mosquito/tick control program? Ms. Sakolsky mentions both could be
pursued.
Mr. Willauer asks about EEE/fresh water vs. salt water mosquitoes.
It is stated that 80% of trapped mosquitoes are salt water mosquitoes and that
although any mosquito can carry a disease; it is unlikely with salt water
mosquitoes. It is also mentioned that no mosquito borne disease has been
documented on Nantucket. Currently there is mapping in place, legwork has been
done and Nantucket could attempt their own program.
The BOH agrees to move their next meeting to June 16th as there is a conflict of
attendance for one member.
The information session is adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
BOH unanimously approves informational meeting on June 16, 2011.
