Barney, Rev. Edward L. Eustis, John B. Folger, Dr. John S. Grouard, Judge Reginald T. Fitz-Randolph and Rev. John Snyder met on April 18, 1911 to draw up a constitution for the proposed Nantucket Hospital Association. WHEREAS: Nantucket citizens including: Mrs. Edwin F. Atkins, Alanson S. Barney, Rev. Edward L. Eustis, Irving Elting, John B. Folger, Mrs. John S. Grouard, Dr. Benjamin Sharp, Mrs. H.O. Underwood and Miss Mary E. Waller were elected in 1911 as the first Trustees of the Nantucket Hospital Association. WHEREAS: Miss Mary E. Waller led early fundraising efforts of the Nantucket Hospital Association, and Mrs. Alexander Atherton, Mrs. George Grimes, Miss Dorothy Sharp and Mrs. Phoebe Small formed a committee in August of 1911 to hire Miss Grace Gillman as the first nurse of the Nantucket Hospital Association. WHEREAS: The Nantucket Hospital Association was incorporated as Nantucket Cottage Hospital under the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on September 20, 1911. WHEREAS: Nantucket Cottage Hospital purchased its first home in December 1912 on West Chester Street and opened two years later, with the first of its only three patients during that summer admitted on August 12, 1914. WHEREAS: The mission of the hospital today echoes the purpose of its founders: The increasingly higher value placed on human life is an infallible indication of higher civilization. To conserve human life on this isolated island, it is imperative that the conditions under which medicine and surgery are practiced must be superseded by modern ones. WHEREAS: Nantucket Cottage Hospital continues today to serve all Nantucket residents and visitors year round for emergency, in-patient, out-patient and preventative medical care. WHEREAS: Nantucket Cottage Hospital provides the most modern health care possible for its patients and ensures their safe transfer to other medical facilities when their needs are beyond the capabilities of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. THEREFORE: Be it resolved that The Nantucket Board of Selectmen recognizes and honors Nantucket Cottage Hospital throughout 2011 for its 100 years of service to Nantucket residents and visitors alike. Signed this 30th day of March, 2011. ______________________________ ______________________________ Patricia Roggeveen, Chairman Whiting Willauer ______________________________ ______________________________ Brian Chadwick Rick Atherton ______________________________ Michael Kopko 57 Prospect Street   Nantucket, MA  02554    Phone 508‐825‐8250   Fax 508‐825‐8249   www.nantuckethospital.org  Nantucket Cottage Hospital is an affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of Partners HealthCare
