HomeMy WebLinkAboutBOSminutes201007221 BOARD OF SELECTMEN Minutes of the Meeting of July 22, 2010. The meeting took place in the Conference Room, 16 Broad Street, Nantucket, MA 02554. Members of the Board present were Rick Atherton, Brian Chadwick, Michael Kopko, Patricia Roggeveen, and Whiting Willauer. Chairman Roggeveen called the meeting to order at 9:03 AM. Sustainable Nantucket Presentation on Draft Climate Protection Action Plan. Town Manager C. Elizabeth Gibson reviewed the steps and reasons that have led to the creation of the Draft Climate Protection Action Plan. Ms. Gibson mentioned that one of the Board’s goals is the adoption of the Climate Action Plan. Mr. Atherton noted that at the beginning Sustainable Nantucket was working on a volunteer basis but then the Board voted on expends funds. Michelle Whelan, from Sustainable Nantucket Executive Director, mentioned that Sustainable Nantucket has spent $60,000 in the first two years. Mr. Chadwick feels the next steps will require more funds and he is not sure if the Town can afford to spend more on this plan. Consultant Alicia Sieger, on behalf of Sustainable Nantucket, reviewed the five milestones and how to use the plan. She said the goal is reductions in emissions by 2020, she mentioned the sources of funds could be state and federal grants. Ms. Sieger informed that on August 5 there will be a community forum at the Athenaeum. Mr. Kopko left the meeting at 10:03 AM. Mr. Chadwick is concerned that committing to this action plan will result in fewer funds for the police station, fire department, etc. The Board members discussed on next steps, whether or not to adopt the action plan, costs involved in going forward. Mr. Chadwick feels the Board should not be part of this plan. Mr. Atherton feels that August 18 is too soon for the Board to adopt the plan. Chairman Roggeveen requested Ms. Gibson to schedule the public hearing for August 18. She also requested to keep all costs involved in the presentation and to have the Board members in the audience at the August 5 presentation. Peter Brace asked if this was an action plan or an adaptation plan. Ms. Sieger answered that it was an adaptation plan. The meeting was unanimously adjourned at 10:34 AM.
