The meeting took place in the Conference Room, Town and County Building, 16 Broad Street, Nantucket, MA 02554. Members of the Board present were Rick Atherton, Brian Chadwick, Michael Kopko, Allen Reinhard, and Patricia Roggeveen. Chairman Kopko called the meeting to order at 10:01 AM. BOARD OF SELECTMEN ORGANIZATION Swearing in Ceremony. Town Clerk Catherine Flanagan Stover administered the oath of office to Mr. Kopko, who was elected at the annual town election on April 14, 2009. Election of Officers. Mr. Atherton commented that the process last year that allowed for “decompression” after the 2008 Annual Election and Town Meeting worked well, and he is in favor of waiting one to two weeks to elect officers. Mr. Atherton moved to defer the election of officers to 22 April 2009; Mr. Reinhard seconded. Mr. Reinhard said he felt last year’s process allowed for time to establish an effective leadership team. Ms. Roggeveen said she did not support deferring election of officers last year and would rather stick with tradition and “hit the ground running”. Chairman Kopko said he felt it was healthy to start a new tradition and spoke in favor of waiting. So voted. Ms. Roggeveen and Mr. Chadwick were opposed. The Board agreed to hold the election of officers at the regularly scheduled 6:00 PM Board meeting on 22 April 2009 and it was also agreed to elect County Commissioners officers and the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority Advisory Board officers. Whitey Willauer suggested that the Board make it a policy to wait a week to elect officers. Chairman Kopko said it was best to leave it to the Board’s prerogative. John McLaughlin commented that past tradition is to offer the vice-chairman the chairmanship and if declined, open it to all Board members. The meeting was unanimously adjourned at 10:11 AM. Approved the 22nd day of April, 2009.
