Town of Nantucket
Phase IIB Downtown Sewer and Water Replacement Project
What is it?
An infrastructure improvement project to be constructed in portions of Downtown Nantucket, which
includes: removal of approximately 4,500 linear feet of existing vitrified clay sewer pipe by open cut and
replacement with 8 to 10-inch PVC sewer pipe; replacement of approximately 900 linear feet of sewer pipe
by pipe bursting and removal of approximately 2,000 linear feet of cast iron and AC water pipe by open cut
and replacement with 6 to 8-inch cement lined ductile iron pipe. The work will occur on and in the following
streets:
Academy Lane Ash Street Ash Lane North Water Street
Quince Street Hussey Street India Street Centre Street
Broad Street Chestnut Street East Chestnut Street Fair Street
South Water Street Main Street Whaler’s Lane Sea Street
Gay Street
Why is it needed?
Infiltration/Inflow removal through the sewer system rehabilitation portion of the project is mandated by
the EPA where NPDES permits are required and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection where federal and/or state funding is being utilized. In Nantucket’s situation, this removal
ensures that needs areas can be sewered as planned by maintaining the design capacity of the wastewater
facilities which is permitted through the EPA NPDES program. Furthermore, the project itself is considered
fundable by MassDEP since it is planned for the removal of I/I. The water main replacement is needed to
improve flow and pressure in the areas where old cast iron pipe is tuberculated and that coincides with the
sewer rehabilitation work planned to save on construction costs.
What is the schedule?
