Meeting Minutes September 2010
Location: 2 Fairgrounds Road
In Attendance: David Sharpe, Wendy Watts, John O’Connor, Angus McVicar.
Absent: David Larivee
Approval of Agenda: Agenda approved as written with no objections.
Approval of minutes: Minutes for July meeting approved as written with no objections.
Meeting called to order by the chair on September 14, 2010 at 10:00 am EST. There was no
meeting in August due to lack of a quorum.
Topics:
1) Review of administrative responses:
As of this date there have been no responses to the emails sent to Mrs. Gibson but we did hear
from Erica Mooney stating that the open committee seats have been posted in the paper in
hopes of finding people to fill the 2 empty seats to restore the committee to a full seven
members.
2) Multiple cabs at the taxi stand at Main & Easy streets:
Discussion began with Lt. McVicar stating that NPD has no objection to changing the regulation
but will continue to enforce it unless there is a change. The regulation exists mainly to give
single car companies a better chance of gaining a good position in the taxi line. David Barrett
chimed in that as a single car owner the regulation is a good thing to have but does not carry the
weight it did back when it was created. Mrs. Watts agreed it is a help and believes it should stay
as is.
No vote was taken but it was agreed unanimously to take no action.
Roundtable Discussion:
A) Committee Members:
Mrs. Watts will add discussion of Town Administration questions / Items A & B of this month’s
agenda. Chairman Sharpe brought up the topic of disco balls in a number of taxis. Autopscott &
Judy’s Taxi currently have them; Lt. McVicar stated they are legal from the NPD standpoint as
long as it is not on while the care is in motion.
Mrs. Watts asked if there have been any vehicle inspections to be sure all required information
is posted as per regulations. Lt. McVicar stated there have not been specific inspections but
vehicles have been checked when they were undergoing regular inspections. David Barrett
commented that a friend and fellow taxi owner had taken a taxi from the boat and noticed that
this taxi did not have the proper postings in their vehicle. Also many drivers are hanging there
drivers permit backward in order to keep important information unreadable from the
passenger’s seat. Lt McVicar will advise sergeants to instruct patrols to look for this.
According to NPD records the summer complaints were down this year and were the usual types
of complaints.
B) Public Comment:
Some taxi owners have stated that many Europeans are now putting their names on the license
waiting list and should the town regulate citizenship be a requirement to receiving a license.
After short discussion Chairman Sharp will pose the question to town administration as to the
legality of such a regulation.
Next Meeting: October 12, 2010 at 10:00am EST.
Adjourn: Meeting adjourned at 11:00am on a motion by John O’Connor with all in favor.
