Meeting Minutes for August 11, 2009
Called to order at: 10:00 am
Location: Town Building Conference Room
Members present: All
A Town webpage for the Committee was discussed; Wendy Watts suggested that a link
could be set up to the taxi regulations, zone maps and comment sheets. Later, maybe taxi
operator permit applications.
Ms. Watts brought up some comments she has received at the National Grid facility on
Bunker Road and how taxi fares vary due to the crossing over of zones.
Jon St. Laurent reviewed the packet he prepared regarding meters, most of which was
done during the past year with the Nantucket Taxi Owners Association and previous
meetings he had with the NPD.
Lt. MacVicar explained that the use of metered receipts could solve discrepancies with
the cross zone travel. Jon St. Laurent said that Naushop has the same situation as
mentioned by Ms. Watts, but could not recall another example on the zone map and
commented that moving the zone line on the map could also fix the discrepancies with
the cross zone situation.
Lt. Mac Vicar reviewed taxi complaints for June and July and said that there were five
and 17 respectively but did not have the nature of the complaints. Mr. St. Laurent
commented that this was minimal, taking into consideration the number of total taxi fares
during that time period. John O’ Connor agreed.
Further discussion on meters and zones continued. David Larivee suggested that the
meter issue should be scheduled for a separate meeting exclusively.
A draft complaint form prepared by Ms. Watts was discussed and it was agreed that Ms.
Watts would make some changes to the format, including changing the title to
“Comments/Suggestions”.
How to make the comment cards accessible was discussed as well as whether or not to
require them in the cabs.
Review of a letter drafted by Ms. Watts to the taxi owners, introducing them to the
Committee and current issues under discussion including comment cards, meters,
revision of the rate/zone structure.
Mr. O’Connor brought up the possibility of better training of the taxi operators and Lt.
MacVicar reviewed the present requirements to obtain an operators permit. Discussion
continued about the possibility of a mandatory “ambassadorship program” for cab
drivers.
Next meeting TAC will finalize the letter to the Owners, finalize the Comment Form and
schedule the meeting for the meter issue.
Adjourned at 11:00 am.
Next Meeting will be August 25, 2009.
Minutes approved the 13th day of October, 2009.
