Minutes for February 10, 2011
The meeting was called to order at 5:07. Present were Chair Dr. Oktay, Dr.Boyce,
Mr. Sjolund, Mr. Atherton, Mr. Smith, and Mr. LaFarge: Mr. Brace, Mr. Saperstein and
Mr. Brasfield. Absent: Mr. Willauer, Ms. Combs, and Ms. Johnson.
The Agenda was approved.
The Minutes for Dec. 7, 2010, were approved after some clarification re: the list of
Chapter 91 Licenses i.e. (“that the Marine Dept. has compiled all Chap. 91 Licenses”).
Chair Report: Dr, Oktay announced that water quality reports back until at least 2006
are now available on the TON website. She noted draft form of HPIC’s support letter to
the BOS supporting the possible sewering of Monomoy. This led to discussion of the
model runs by SMAST, as noted by Mr. Atherton: the effects of sewering Monomoy,
sewering Shimmo, and the raising of the Jetties. Wondering was done about the details
of model inputs.
Also under Old Business, Mr. Brace gave the Board an outline of his ideas for content
concerning the Blue Pages. There was a discussion on the nature of Nantucket’s
freshwater lens, and its description in the forthcoming book. Those present were
encouraged to brainstorm before the next HPIC meeting. It was hoped to bring a
proposal before the BOS in the near future.
It was announced that Urban Harbors would be here for a Public Meeting Feb. 15.
It was reported by Dr. Boyce, Mr. LaFarge and Dr. Saperstein that the Article 68
Work Group has issued its Best Management Practices in draft form for peer review by
all interested, and that it would shortly be posted on the TON website.
In reporting as BOS Liaison, Mr. Atherton described the mechanics of SBPF’s wish
to have an approved Coastal Management Plan. There was discussion; including concern
that planning could be done before detailed inventory of resources.
From ROW, Mr. Atherton reported the deployment of twelve more Right of Way
markers. Mention was made of the planning of greenways, connecting off-road paths.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30.
Respectfully submitted,
Bam LaFarge
