Dear Ms Roggeveen:
At its meeting of September 1, 2012, the Advisory Committee of
Nonvoting Taxpayers voted unanimously to support the Town’s efforts
to complete a bicycle path from the end of Washington Street to the
Rotary. The Committee received at its prior meeting August 11th a
report on this path from Ms Melissa Philbrick of ReMain Nantucket
that included a copy of the formal plan that has been created by the
Town’s Transportation Planner. Ms Philbrick indicated that she and
ReMain Nantucket consider this connector to be a important
ingredient in the re‐vitalization of downtown Nantucket and we agree
completely.
The lives and livelihood of Nantucketers would be greatly improved if
pedestrian and human‐powered traffic could be separated from the
heavy car and truck traffic along Washington, Francis, Union, and
Orange Streets. Such a path would greatly enhance access to Town
center.
The Advisory Committee, as stated on the Town’s web site, “will make
recommendations to the Board of Selectmen on issues of concern to
the nonresident taxpayers.” At present, this connector is our highest
concern. We hope that you will introduce this letter, and its message
of support, formally at the next meeting of the Board of Selectmen.
Thank you.
Advisory Committee of Nonvoting Taxpayers
