At the August 29, 2009, meeting of the ACNVT, the security of the tank
farm in Wilkes Square was a major concern. Both for reasons of fire safety
and to reduce any risk from terrorism, an updated review of security
measures is urged.
We understand that plans are being developed for relocation to the airport
industrial area on Bunker Road, perhaps within the next five years. We also
have reason to believe that the Wilkes Square owners and the tank farm
lessee share concerns about security.
A specific action urged is making a request to the Department of Homeland
Security to send a tank farm expert to the island for a thorough review of
security measures in place. The expert’s report of findings should include
suggestions for security upgrades that could reasonably be implemented
before the relocation.
U.S. Representative Delahunt’s office could perhaps help the BOS get a
positive DHS response.
We think that all island residents, year-round as well as summer, in town and
those residing in rural areas, would appreciate any further steps the BOS
decides to take in this urgent matter.
Respectfully,
Howard Blitman
Chairman, ACNVT
