FAMILY COUNCIL
CURRENT
RENOVATIONS &
ROOM MOVES
The renovation of the East Wing
Shower room continues! Maron
The Quality Assurance
Improvement Plan to improve
the dining room foyer is almost
complete. The doors have been
hung and look fabulous. After
some furniture rearranging and a
television installation, the space
will be ready to be enjoyed by all!
The next Family Council meeting
will be held on Wednesday, May
9th at 10:00am. The guest
speaker will be our new
Administrator Brett Lennerton.
Please join us to meet and chat
with Brett.
Annual Memorial
Service
The annual Our Island Home
Memorial Service will be held
this year on Wednesday, May
16th at 10:00am in the Albert E. Lewis Dining Room.
Please join us to honor and
celebrate the lives of our
residents who have passed on
over the last year.
Construction began this project in
late February. In order to decrease
disruption to our residents, all
residents with rooms at the end of
the East wing were moved. Once
the East shower/tub is completed,
other bathroom renovations will
begin. Residents and families will
be notified in advance as room
changes will occur again in order
to prevent as much noise
disturbance as possible.
SAFETY COMITTEE
In order to be compliant with CMS
regulations, bedrail reduction has
begun. This is a group effort,
involving nursing, PT, and
maintenance. Nursing and PT will
determine whose bedrails are
appropriate/not appropriate or not
needed and will be asking
maintenance to remove them
accordingly. Residents or health
care agents will be asked to sign
consent forms for the side rails if it
is determined that they can be kept.
As always, it is our highest priority
to keep our resident’s comfort and
safety in mind.
The following is an excerpt from
the CMS guidance to surveyors for
your review: “Side rails sometimes
restrain residents. The use of side rails as
restraints is prohibited unless they are
necessary to treat a resident's medical
symptoms. Residents who attempt to exit a
bed through, between, over or around side
rails are at risk of injury or death.
April 17th Shellfish Hatchery

April 20th Small Friends of
Nantucket are coming to visit
with our residents and sing
songs!
April 28th Daffodil Day Car
Parade please join our residents

rails than from a fall from a bed where side rails
are not used. They also potentially increase the
likelihood that the resident will spend more time in
bed and fall when attempting to transfer from the
bed. As with other restraints, for residents who are
restrained by side rails, it is expected that the
process facilities employ to reduce the use of side
rails as restraints is systematic and gradual to
ensure the resident's safety while treating the
resident's medical symptom. The same device may
have the effect of restraining one individual but not
another, depending on the individual resident's
condition and circumstances. For example, partial
rails may assist one resident to enter and exit the
bed independently while acting as a restraint for
another”. If you have any questions or
concerns regarding this please contact
Heather Francis, DON or Carol Matson LPN.
