The Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS) created
the Five-Star Quality
Rating System to help
consumers and families
compare nursing homes
based on facility
performance for three
types of performance
measures. The rating
takes the form of ‘stars’
and each facility is given
between 1 and 5 stars in
each area in comparison
to other nursing homes
that participate in
Medicare or Medicaid. It
is updated upon new
inspections of the facility
by the State Department

Our Island Home’s rating
as of December 2017 is a
5 star rating! This is
considered to be above
average.
This rating currently
does not account for our
two most recent surveys
held in November 2017.
Once that data is
updated (Health
Inspections and Staffing)
a new rating will be
made available on

Friends of Our Island Home
helped sponsor the Annual
Christmas Party on Friday,
December 22nd. Delicious food
was served from our kitchen:
from seafood chowder, scallops,
hot hors d’oeuvres, to cider, egg
nog, and mini cakes. Santa
provided each resident with a
personal gift, funded by Friends
of OIH, purchased at local stores.
Staff members, Daniel Ross,
Activities Assistant, and Fernella
Phillips, Dietary Aide led
residents, friends, family, and
staff in caroling.
We are happy to welcome Kellie
Coffman, our new Business Office
Assistant! Kellie moved to
Nantucket in July 2017 from
Durango, Colorado. Born in
Southern California, Kellie worked
in the hospitality industry for nine
years and worked as an
Administrative Assistant to the
principal while residing in
Durango. She looks forward
getting to know our residents,
staff and family here at OIH.
We will be having another
addition to our team come mid
January, filling the assistant to the
DON position.

TIME SLIPS
TimeSlips is a storytelling method
for older adults with cognitive
impairment that engages
imagination to tell a story. Using
images and verbal cues, either
individually or as a group, a story is
composed, recorded, re-read and
published.
TimeSlips became an independent
non-profit in 2013 and has
Certified Facilitators in 42 states
and 12 countries. Allison Forsgren,
President of Friends of OIH,
recently became a Certified
Facilitator and is pleased to be a
recipient of grant monies from the
Nantucket Arts Council to begin a
program at Our Island Home. The
pilot program will start this month,
January 21st and run through
February, every other Sunday
afternoon. Please contact Taylor
Hilst for more information.
If you would like to

OMBUDSMAN
Sarah Franey, LTC
Ombudsman, is our
newest Ombudsman (a
tough role to fill since
Helene Blair's departure)
and doing a fantastic job.
Sarah has been visiting
our residents & family
members at least once a
month. She plans to
attend Resident Council
this month and Family
Council in the near future.
For those of you who are
not familiar with the
Ombudsman program, it is
a program run by the
Executive Office of Elder
Affairs and is located
throughout Massachusetts
in 24 program areas. The
Ombudsman volunteers
and staff receive extensive
training and are certified
by the State Ombudsman
to visit nursing homes on
a regular basis.
The main purpose of an
Ombudsman is to be an
advocate for residents,
offering a way for
residents and their loved
ones to voice their
complaints and have their
concerns addressed so
that residents can live
their lives with dignity
and respect.
If you would like to reach
Sarah her phone # is 508-
394-4630 and her email is
sarah.franey@escci.org.
Her contact information is
also posted on the bulletin
board located on the
North wing, near the
entrance.

Monthly Quote
“I’m old enough to
have been in a few
places, and I think
this place is
exceptional.” -BS
Multiple other building
construction work that
has funding was merged
into one large bid rather
than advertising for
multiple smaller projects.
Unfortunately, due to the
bid responses coming in
over the allocated funding
amounts, there was a need
to redo the original bid
and prioritize which
projects would be done
first.
We hope to have a
contract awarded soon!
The projects in this
merged bid include:
* Complete renovation of
the East shower/tub room
with inclusion of an
appropriate Beauty Salon
space. This will include
the purchase of a new tub
and an additional shower
stall for usage.
* Complete renovation of
the West shower and
related bath areas.
* The exposed electric
panel at the end of the
South Wing shall be
enclosed and the entrance
adjusted to accommodate
this.
CAPITAL UPDATE: FUTURE PROJECTS
There is a lot of internal
work being done
regarding capital
upgrades to the current
facility. There are
multiple projects being
reviewed and in the
bidding process, as
required by the
Commonwealth of
Massachusetts for public
projects.
Completed Work:
Some work that has
already been fulfilled has
been the purchase and
installation of all new
washers and dryers in
the laundry room, new
walk-in freezer and
cooking stove system in
the kitchen, as well as a
chest freezer.
Upcoming Projects:
There is funding
allocated for resident
furniture and closets
upgrades. We hope to
have the closet bid
advertised and new
furniture options
available for the
residents and staff to
review next month.
Employee of the Month
Donna King
is our December EotM!
Donna is one of OIH’s LPNs who provides care to our
residents on the night shift!
Volunteer of the Month
Georgia Snell
Thank you for all you do since 1989! Each week
residents enjoy church service, bible study, and
“Georiga’s Gam,” where stories, jokes, and songs are
shared.
* Tile and finish work in
the Kitchen as well as the
installation of additional
air ventilation units.
* Resident bathroom
upgrades to certain
fixtures as a safety need
(ex. toilet wall carriers).
* The Nourishment
kitchen will be renovated
to provide for better
accessibility and
functionality.
* Exterior building side
wall repair.
Once a contract is
awarded for the above
projects, work will begin.
It is important to note
that we will do our best to
manage the resident’s
needs while these
projects are underway.
They will not all be
occurring at the same
time to ensure the least
amount of disruption to
the residents everyday
lives as best we can. Once
project start dates,
timelines, and
accommodations are
determined; we will
provide this information
to you.
Any questions on the
above, or other ideas for
improvement projects at
the facility, please don’t
hesitate to contact us!
