We would like to thank the Nantucket Ballet School for performing the Nutcracker in the Our Island Home dining room. Our residents, staff, and family members enjoyed each performance and helped us spread holiday cheer to all. OIH looking like Whoville! A huge thanks goes to SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER 2 ANNUAL STATE SURVEYS The Annual State Survey occurred on November 8th and 9th. Nursing homes participating in Medicare and Medicaid are required by federal law to undergo an annual survey and certification process by its state's health department. Homes must be in substantial compliance with Medicare and Medicaid requirements, as well as state law. Surveyors toured the facility, reviewed charts, Caroline Cole Designs for decorating our building for the holiday season. Residents were able to help and watch the trees go up, ornaments hung, and lights brighten up their home. You can never have too many parties! Thank you Cape Air for throwing the residents and staff another wonderful Christmas party. Administration has recently received the report, providing us with categories to be addressed in order to remain in compliance and provide residents with the highest quality of life. A Plan of Correction (PoC) has begun and will be submitted within the upcoming week. The Life Safety Code (LSC) Survey, occurred on November 29th. The LSC is a set of fire protection requirements designed to provide a reasonable degree of safety from fire. It covers construction, protection, and operational features designed to provide safety from fire, smoke, and panic. SOCIAL SERVICE NEWS WELCOME LPN, LAURA! Family Council: The next Family Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 10th from 10-11am. QAPI: The Family Council has just started working on a very exciting project and would love more family members to join in. They have recognized a problem/need at OIH; "More space is needed for our residents, families and guests to gather." In order to address this they are using a standardized format called a Quality Assurance Performance Improvement Plan(QAPI). This plan is a way to systematically identify a problem/need, develop Performance Improvement Project (PIP) Team to work on changes, and then measure the results. The Goal of this Project is to make our attractive Dining Room entrance available to everyone, when meals & clean-up are not in place. Some changes being discussed are: Securing the room for resident safety; Redesigning the sitting area so that it is conducive to holding small groups, such as Trivia, Bible Study, Inky Designing a small section of the front portion of the dining room for socializing, enjoying coffee, working on laptops, reading and enjoying each others' company. DECEMBER DELIGHTS Friends of Our Island Home is a charitable fund established through the Community Foundation for Nantucket; helping to reconnect OIH residents with the Nantucket community. Each Tuesday afternoon, Frances Karttunen, a family fixture at Our Island Home, presents a narrated slide show in the living room. The topics are varied and the content chosen specifically to engage the residents. Please join us For “December Delights We are happy to welcome Laura, our new travel LPN to the OIH team! Laura is a mom to two grown girls living in North Carolina and Florida, and five grandchildren. She has been an LPN for 36 years. Laura has been a travel nurse for 13 years, having worked in New Hampshire, Texas, Wyoming, Arizona, Alaska, Washington and Tennessee. Laura calls Florida her home. In her off time she enjoys knitting, reading and exploring her new surroundings; she has seen the Northern Lights and “they are SPECTACULAR!” “Thank you for letting me join you here at Our Island Home.” STAFF CHANGES An update on next year’s staff changes. Michelle, our Business Office Assistant has accepted a position with the town HR dept. Michelle has been an invaluable asset to the OIH team and will be missed by all. I’m sure she will visit often! Within the new year OIH will gain both a new Business Office Assistant and an Executive Assistant to the DON. We are looking forward to add new members to the OIH family. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY Please join us on Friday December 22nd @ 4pm to enjoy Christmas treats and music with residents, family, and staff! Residents will each receive a present purchased from local island businesses, paid for by Friends of Our Island Home. The LSC and HCFC, which is revised periodically, is a publication of NFPA, which was founded in 1896 to promote the science and improve the methods of fire protection. Administration has received the report and our PoC has been approved.
