Meeting Minutes for August 8, 2012
Location: Training Room – Public Safety Facility - 4 Fairgrounds Road, Nantucket MA
In Attendance: David Sharpe, Chairman, Lisa Bouchard, Angus MacVicar, and Lynne Robinson
Absent: John O’Connor
Meeting called to order by the Chairman at 10:03 am EST.
Approval of minutes: Approval of Minutes from April 12 and June 13
Topics:
1) 6/13 BOS meeting to review expanding 60 licenses cap
The committee discussed the Board of Selectmen meeting from June 13. The Selectmen chose
to keep the cap at 62 including handicap accessible cars. Audience member, David Barrett
expressed concerned regarding Autopscot Taxi’s actual use of its handicap vans. It is expected
that 2 more taxis will get handicap licenses in the near future.
2) Fare refusals by some taxi drivers
The committee discussed the recent letter by the Town of Nantucket to taxi owners addressing
the recent issue of some taxis refusing to take fares to ‘Sconset, Wauwinet and other distant
sections in order to take more people in shorter more frequent runs to Town. The committee
expressed concern that it is a matter that only occurs briefly during the year and can only be
addressed properly by the owners policing their drivers and immediate communication with the
police when it occurs.
3) Roundtable Discussion.
Lisa expressed concern about drivers smoking in the airport line. The Airport security officer had
been recently laid off and there was no one replacing him to enforce rules in the taxi line. Lisa
said she will go to the next Airport Commission meeting to ask about this.
Audience member Jim Grandgrade brought up the subject of the police ticketing taxis in the taxi
line at the Hy-Line/ Tavern area. Lt. MacVicar will look into it. He thinks it might be an over
eager CSO and will make sure it does not occur.
